Before we shipped the old cows late last week, we weaned the calves. After weaning, we process the calves giving them the vaccinations they need and allowing us to see each calf up close and personal–assessing their overall health and condition. Occasionally, a calf or two will have a case of pink eye that needs to be treated, for example.
It was a fun afternoon, because our entire work crew consisted of our four kids. The older boys were horseback bringing calves from a large pen in the corrals to a smaller holding pen behind the alleyway. My daughter was in charge of keeping the vaccine cold, which means sitting on the cooler in between times of refilling vaccine guns.
And my youngest son…
…well, let’s just say he kept himself entertained while the rest of us did a little work.
